My Quest for a Decent Guitar Sound at Low Volumes
Over the years I have spent thousands on trying to get a decent electric guitar sound at lower ‘bedroom’ volume levels. I invested in all sorts of equipment to try and accomplish this, and really never had success.
If anyone has ever played through an all valve amplifier at a loud volume they will know that it sounds absolutely amazing. there is nothing compared to it. The trouble is with these amps is that the only way you can achieve this is to drive the valves (or tubes as they are also known). This means that the amps are extremely (and I mean extremely) loud.
This creates a huge issue when trying to recreate this sound at lower volumes. One I have as yet to solve. I always realised that you would never achieve the full sound of a driven amp at low volumes but a closer sound would have been great.
There are people offering lower wattage amps, power attenuators and other products that claim to allow you to achieve this. As you will read here, the results are often most disappointing - and expensive.
I have now succumbed to the fact that I will not achieve this and I now use a solid state amplifier with a couple of effects pedal and overall I am pretty pleased with the sound I get although still not fully happy.
My quest continues……………..
