Tenacious D - The Greatest Band on Earth

If you haven’t heard of Tenacious D (also known as the D) or haven’t checked out their music then you really have been missing out. They claim to be the greatest band on earth and to be honest with you, I am tempted to agree.

The band consists of 2 members. Pretty famous ones in fact. Jack black - an A list movie star - on vocals. He has been in films such as School of Rock, the Cable Guy, Shallow Hal and more recently the Tenacious D movie The Pick of Destiny - amongst many others. Jack is the lead singer in the band and also plays the guitar.

The second and final member of the band is Kyle Gass. Kyle is also an actor. He has been in many movies, quite a few of them with Jack. He tends to play very minor parts in films and sometimes is only seen for a small amount of time.. Of course, The Tenacious D movie - The Pick of Destiny - he has a starring role along side Jack.

So what about the music. Well….. its kind of comedy acoustic rock but the actual quality of the music is amazing. JB and KG (as they are known) can both pick up and acoustic guitar and make music. I always thing this is particularly nice to have something that sounds great without the need for drummers, bassists etc.

Tenacious D have now released 2 studio albums although there are a lot of songs and video clips out there that are yet to be released on an album. The albums do have backing musicians to beef up the sound a bit with guest stars such as Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters on drums.

Tracks include titles such as Wonderboy, Kyle Quit the Band, Friendship, F$%k her Gently and probably their most famous track - Tribute which is about the tribute to the greatest song in the world.

Whilst I have a love for all these songs Tribute is an amazingly written piece and great for jamming along to on your guitar. F&*k her gently is another masterpiece as far as the song construction goes. If you don’t mind a bit of bad language its a must to check out.

The second album is the soundtrack to the film The Pick of Destiny. The album features a couple of songs from their earlier days such as History - the history of tenacious D and Master Exploder along with some other rocking tracks.

I had the privilege of seeing Tenacious D live recently and it is well worth going. they played some songs just as acoustic numbers and some with the full band.

Tenacious D started off together doing some short video sketches. This is where most of the earlier material comes from. There is a DVD out that has a live concert on it and these episodes. If you just can’t wait to hear them then go to Youtube and type Tenacious D HBO and you should find them to view.

Tenacious D really could well be the greatest band on earth! Check them out!

Interesting. I saw them on saturday night live once, and it was some comedy song they were playing. I didn’t really like it.

I’ve heard amazing things about them, just haven’t gotten around to listening to them.

Nice article. I’ll give ‘em a shot.

    I have to disagree…

By far the greatest band on earth is LED ZEPPELIN!

Then Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, David Bowie, U2, RedHotChilliPeppers!!!
