What are Chords?

One of the lovely things about playing the guitar is the fact that you can pick up the guitar and start strumming and singing along to lots of different songs. You don’t have to be the best singer in the world - I certainly am not. Strumming give the song a nice backing. This backing is made up of chords.

The definition of a chord is to play more than one note at the same time. Generally speaking there are 3 or more notes that make up a chord.

Coming up in the next few posts there will be some chords that will get you started. Once you have mastered these simple chords you will  be able to play along to hundred and hundreds of songs. I think this is one of the most satisfying part about the guitar. Even if you are totally new to learning, with a little bit of practice you will be able to play many songs.

A good song to start hearing chords being played is Wonderwall by Oasis. The song starts with 4 simple chords that repeat over and over whilst the melody of the song is sung over the top. This is one of the simplest chord progressions to learn and one of the first tunes we will be working on.
