Here I am going to present to you 4 chords that you need to learn. These are the first chords I learnt and are a great starting point to playing music as many many songs include these chords within them.

I’m now going to walk you through playing each chord:

The G Chord

 

This is a G major chord. You do not need to call it a major as by calling it G is the same thing in musical terms.

 

Here is the fingering:

Middle finger on 3rd fret of the bottom E string

Index finger on 2nd fret of the A string

ring finger on 3rd fret of the top E string

The o’s mean all the notes are played so position your fingers in the shape listed above and strum all 6 strings.

 

The Em chord

This is the E minor chord. Minor chords are a a sad sounding type of chord.

Put your first finger (index finger) on the 2nd fret of the A string

Put your second finger (middle finger) on the 2nd fret of the D string

Play all six strings also.

 

 

The C Chord

 

 

Again with this C it is a major chord. It is the first chord that does not ustilise all 6 strings.

 

 

Your third finger (ring finger) goes on 3rd fret on the A string

Your second finger (middle finger) goes on the 2nd fret on the D string

Your first finger (index finger) goes on the 1st fret of the B string

5 notes are strummed here so take care in avoiding the bottom E string or it just won’t sound correct.

 

 

The D Chord

This is again the major chord of D. I find most people enjoy playing the D chord when they begin the guitar. This is also a chord that only plays 4 of the 6 strings.

Your first finger goes on the G string , 2nd fret

Your third finger goes on the B string 3rd fret

Your second finger goes on the top E string 2nd fret

Remember to avoid playing the E and the A string as this chord only uses 4 strings.

 

 

 

These chords in this order sound good. Play each chord 4 times then change to the next. Keep repeating until you get nice smooth changes.

Start off very slow! - This is very often ignored but essential. start off slow, get it perfect the speed it up
